Search data shows us how much we missed the gym during second lockdown across UK cities

We’re excited to be reopening our gyms in England on the 2nd December after a second nationwide lockdown, but with non-essential shops, restaurants, pubs and more having been closed for the last month, we wanted to find out the things that we have all been longing to re-open the most over November.

With England and Scotland having been placed under tight restrictions, many of us have been missing the things that we once took for granted. Whilst seeing family and partners is at the top of many of our lists, what about the high-street staples?

What we’ve missed the most in the UK

Looking at UK search data around searches related to when businesses will reopen, the majority were found to be longing for gyms to reopen, with an average of 135,000 searches for ‘when will the gyms reopen’ per month, almost twice searching for second placed pubs, with ‘when will pubs reopen’ garnering an average of 74,000 monthly searches.

In third place was hairdressers, with 33,1000 monthly searches, followed by cinemas (8,100 monthly searches) and restaurants (5,600 monthly searches).

What Londoners missed the most

People who live in London were found to miss the gym over three times as much as the next most ‘missed’ past-time. Mirroring that of the UK, hairdressers followed with an average of 2,400 monthly searches.

Compared to other areas in the UK, Londoners were found to be the region that were most missing spas.

  2. Pubs – 5,400 monthly searches
  3. Hairdressers – 2,400 monthly searches
  4. Cinemas – 1,000 monthly searches
  5. Restaurants – 720 monthly searches
  6. Nightclubs – 590 monthly searches
  7. Theatres – 590 monthly searches
  8. Spas – 390 monthly searches
  9. Cafes – 260 monthly searches
  10. Clothes shops – 210 monthly searches

What the people of Manchester missed the most

Manchester showed the residents’ highest interest was getting back in the gym, mirroring much of the rest of the country.

The research also showed that more people in Manchester were missing nightclubs more than restaurants, reflecting the musical heritage of the city and popularity of places like the Hacienda.

  2. Pubs – 480 monthly searches
  3. Hairdressers – 210 monthly searches
  4. Cinemas – 90 monthly searches
  5. Nightclubs – 60 monthly searches
  6. Restaurants – 50 monthly searches
  7. Theatres – 40 monthly searches
  8. Cafes – 30 monthly searches
  9. Spas – 20 monthly searches
  10. Clothes shops – 20 monthly searches

What the people of Cambridge missed the most

Looking at the city of Cambridge, the research showed that its residents can’t wait to get their locks trimmed when lockdown finishes, with hairdressers being the number one business that people are longing to reopen the most, with an average of 270 monthly searches for “when will the hairdressers reopen”.

This was followed by the gym with 250 monthly searches and pubs, 150 monthly searches.

  1. Hairdressers – 270 monthly searches
  2. Gyms – 250 monthly searches
  3. Pubs – 150 monthly searches
  4. Restaurants – 100 monthly searches
  5. Cafes – 70 monthly searches
  6. Theatres – 80 monthly searches
  7. Clothes shops – 80 monthly searches
  8. Spas – 50 monthly searches
  9. Cinemas – 20 monthly searches
  10. Nightclubs – 10 monthly searches

What the people of Bristol missed the most

Bristol, the city well known for its great nightlife, saw nearly twice as many searches for “when will the gyms reopen” (1,600 monthly searches) than “when will the pubs reopen” (880 monthly searches). Hairdressers and cinemas followed.

What the people of Birmingham missed the most

Looking to the midlands and the city of Birmingham, our research showed that people were longing for gyms to reopen nearly three times as much as the next most searched for business, the pub.

Mirroring the country wide data, third on the list was hairdressers with 480 monthly searches, followed by cinemas with 170.

What the people of Leicester missed the most

The research showed that Leicester are missing the pubs more than any other business in the list, with a whopping 1,900 monthly searches for “when will the pubs reopen”.

This was followed by the gym (1,300 monthly searches) and hairdressers (590 monthly searches).

When it came to Nottingham, our research showed that it was the gyms and the pubs that dominated, with 590 and 320 monthly searches respectively. Nightclubs, hairdressers and restaurants followed.

What the people of Glasgow missed the most

Looking to Scotland and the city of Glasgow, the research showed that once again, people can’t wait to be back in the gym. There was an average of 720 monthly searches for “when will the gyms reopen” compared to 390 for “when will the pubs reopen” and 260 for “when will the hairdressers reopen”.

The fourth most longed for business was found to be the cinema followed by nightclubs.

  4. Cinemas – 50 monthly searches

With gyms being the most searched for venue, the reopening of gyms in England on the 2nd December is great news for millions of gym-goers.
