London Camden gym reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect... I am thrilled with Pure Gym in Camden but a few additions are needed: 1. Boxing Bags (Soho gym had them) 2. Skipping area 3. TVs Several machines are always out of service. Get the technician in more regularly please.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, no-frills gym. Busy. PureGym Camden provides a good, no-frills gym setup with plenty of kit for the majority of workouts. This includes: - A suit of treadmills, stair climbers, rowing machines, ellipticals and more for cardio. - An open space for functional training/cross training including a frame, battle ropes, assault bikes, vertical rowers, kettle bells, etc. - A wide variety of cable and plate machines. - A vast array of free weights in a rather cluttered and crowded free weight area. This includes benches, smith machines, 2x benchpress racks, 2 x squat racks and an olympic platform and deadlift frame. - Stretching area with rollers, swiss balls, etc. As a consequence of Pure's value-based business model, the gym is often very busy at peak times, with the cluttered weights area being a challenge as the skeleton staff struggle to keep it tidy in the face of gym users who don't return equipment properly, if at all. They have provided 10 or so adjustable benches but just don't have the space for them to all be used safely at the same time. If you like to use a lifting belt, straps, bar pads or chains you will have to bring in your own. The atmosphere is generally quite welcoming, staff are friendly and I've struck up a good rapport with a few other users but gym etiquette is quite limited, with several users showing no understanding of working-in or sharing equipment at peak times. There is just a single, tepid water fountain available, to encourage you to pay extra for their Yanga Sports Water service which is lovely and cold. The only real let down at this gym is the changing provision (or lack of it). Whilst we go to the gym to work out, not for fancy changing rooms, the layout of their changing rooms is poor, despite a recent refit. At peak times you can expect to be self-consciously bumping cheeks in an overcrowded room where no-one can quite find the space. Generally, the showers are as clean as you'd expect in a busy gym. In summary, this is a good, if busy, gym with all you should need for a good workout but lacking the level of space and comfort that premium gym users may be used to. I enjoy working out there, especially during the quieter times of day and seasons. I don't attend the classes so cannot offer an opinion on them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super motivational teacher Great class. It went super fast, and my muscles are extremely sore today! The teacher was super motivational and shared her excitement with all of us. great fun!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overcrowded Classes Despite booking a class, several non booked members turn up before the ones that have booked it in advance. This leaves no space for the ones that have booked it and I've had to go back on a few occasions.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from too loud The music is way too loud for a focused workout! It feels much more so in the evenings/nights. It is really unnecessary as most people listen to their own headphones. Too much noise is unhealthy and even dangerous as it distracts you from focused exercise execution. Some very useful equipment missing. Otherwise, a good gym. Big advantage is that it's open 24 hours.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Outdated sexism I am appalled at the decision to 'genderise' the lavatories in Camden Town. They are all separate so there is no reason why they should not all be available to all, especially as there are many more male active users so they are being discriminated against. I would also say that the male changing room is disgracefully small

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Convenient but riddled with issues Appreciate that the gym membership is cheap compared to others and it's really convenient for me, however the overall experience has become increasingly substandard. It's now impossible to find a time when it's not busy, the studio's rarely available due to classes, there's limited floor/mat space and mirrors (particularly full length ones), the walkways could be utilized more effectively (feels like a waste of space) and worst of all the changing rooms and showers are cramped and unhygienic. At first I thought this was a great replacement for Soho Gyms but I'm enjoying my experience less and less.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too busy - not enough equipment Positives - Staff are friendly and approachable, and there are lots of treadmills and cross trainers Negatives - Too busy Recent marketing campaign has meant the gym is full at most points of the day - Mirrors Not enough mirrors and no full length mirrors, needed particularly in the mat area where I do physio - Toilets Only 2 male toilets for the entire gym, all toilets on the gym floor which can cause a smell, no toilets in the changing rooms, no urinals - the gym must be 70% male which means you have to often wait - Changing room Far too small for the gyms capacity with no air con - Showers Often very grubby with no option to change the temperature of the water, its either HOT or HOT - Layout Lots of wasted space on the gym floor which could be used for extra equipment or larger changing rooms - Lack of equipment Only 1 leg press, no adjustable cables, because of the crowds the gym floor is often a mess
