Southampton Shirley gym reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Easy to get on machines, nice people there and plenty of choice

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value gym I've been going to Pure Gym on & off since 2013 and can't fault the value for money. Good facilities and good classes (although availability is sometimes difficult at peak 'after work' times)

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Average at best I signed up to my local pure gym due to convenience of location and cheapest price however many of the instructors there are never helpful. Example being always on there phones and when I do see them coaching people they lack what appears to be the knowledge or intention of correcting form and look as if there just trying to get there 1 on 1 or class clients through the workout so they can carry on doing nothing. This isn't to be taken for everyone as there are a couple of good instructors e.g. Magda. Instructors just showing a presence on the gym floor would probably go a long way to correcting this. Speaking of the gym floor it's a disgrace, weights left lying around, not stacked and when they are rarely stacked there all mixed up and while this is a result of gym users the threat of bans or suspensions of access to the gym along with instructors presence on the gym floor and adequate signage might go a long way to correct this. Hygiene in the gym particularly the cleanliness of the shower cubicles isn't great. Not much needs saying on this and although I suppose you get what you pay for and I admit PureGym is probably the best budget gym around there still needs to be a minimum standard set. The gym is one of the least intimidating I've been to and caters well for inclusion and getting its clients around every area however there are times during the day when there are people that to put it nicely take the Michael for instance taking phone calls and just sitting on pieces of equipment for long periods of time and even when asked to allow you on between sets get aggravated with you and complaints of this aren't addressed by members of staff. I'm not sure if there are a few "PT'S" there in training but as someone with experience in the field there seems to be a lack of knowledge across the board or a sense of entitlement to not share knowledge from some of them. Maybe this is down to them not having there own clients and it all being run through pure gym in a separate way. Space to do a more varied style of workout could be a good idea, there's plenty of equipment CV wise, average weight selection, firmly believe there should be more squat racks somewhere. May be down to space and just providing the popular additions but somewhere to do more CrossFit or mixed workouts or being allowed to move equipment around to some degree to accommodate individuals could be a good idea, I think it would also bring in different clients and make the gym more popular, this could also be done in a class format instead of the same classes all the time? Other cardio or machines not just the same lot so maybe add a couple assault bikes to the gym or more rowers, less treadmills if space is needed. There are popular areas of the gym that could be expanded and utilised better if you removed more main stream things such as treadmills as it appears to only ever be a like 1-2 hour window in the day where even still only up to 90% of the treadmills are being used and people doing there own circuit or something are squashing in at any area of space they can find next to an empty treadmill taking up floor space. The waiting area for classes should have a clear passage from the doorway to the changing room at busy periods or have more time allocated for change over between classes as it often creates a back log, is there any way of moving the automated entrance further into the huge corridor you have after the main entrance as this seems to be empty wasted space in an already very packed gym?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good classes Good classes and very good instructors. Shower rooms need updating and more frequent cleaning.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Class I used to go here last year and now restarted my membership, went to a class, (circuits) was exactly what was advertised, instructor was very nice and adjusted for needs. however, upstairs I think there is not enough space for mats/ stretches, I could not use the downstairs room either, as there was a class, so I had to wait.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great gym but could use a more thorough cleaning I am very happy with the gym since I signed up. Good equipment and very friendly and helpful staff

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice gym! Lovely staff The gym is nice, often very busy! Sometimes difficult to get on the equipment you’d like! And often free weight is full of loads of guys, can be quite intimidating! All the staff I have spoken or been in their classes have been really nice! Would really like some more of the classes to be offered from 5pm onwards, as I currently can’t access some of the classes I’d like!
